Pleased to announce that I will continue racing for the CFR Team

Next stop #Rio2016 Lots to come on the way

PR: XC Champs Re-Sign with Cannondale Factory Racing As Cannondale Factory Racing enters its seventh season, Manuel Fumic, Marco Aurelio Fontana, and Anton Cooper Sign on for 2 more years Wilton, Conn. – December 9, 2014 – Cannondale, a premium brand of Dorel Industries (TSX: DII.B, DII.A), and Cannondale Factory Racing are excited to announce that Manuel Fumic of Germany, Marco Aurelio Fontana of Italy, and Anton Cooper of New Zealand will compete with the team for two more years. With the recent signing of Henrique Avancini, the Cannondale Factory Race team is complete. The athletes are ready for the 2015 season and eager to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Through the years, Manuel Fumic, a three-time Olympian, former World Champion and frequent visitor to the World Cup podium; and Marco Fontana, Olympic Bronze medalist and winner of multiple Italian Championships, have created a unique style of XC racing that has propelled them to stardom within the sport. Fumic and Fontana win races, but they do so in such a way that makes the sport approachable, while inspiring their fans to get on the mountain and shred. Over the next two years, they will continue expressing themselves and developing their riding skills to remain at the top of the sport. “This will be my seventh year with the Cannondale family,” said Fontana. “Honestly, I cannot think about being anywhere else. Over the last two years, I went through some tough times, but found my best at the end of the 2014 season. Therefore, I am burning to shine again over the next two years. The commitment the team has to the sport, and the great vibe among us is really important for me. I cannot wait for 2015 to start.” When discussing his teammate, Manuel Fumic mentioned, “Marco and I are like brothers, and I hope we will race together at the next Olympics. We will work hard to get ourselves on top of the podiums in races around the globe, and do it our way,” and added, “Expect some cool stuff to happen along the way.” Cannondale Factory Racing’s young gun, Anton Cooper is the future of XC racing. Since entering the sport, Cooper has achieved great results in his short career. Currently, he is the reigning Commonwealth MTB Champion. At only twenty, Cooper is the youngest winner of a U23 World Cup event to-date. “We went through some ups and downs over the past two years, but Cannondale Factory Racing has become my second home. The team has supported me on the rough road to becoming an Elite rider. Signing for two more years is an amazing honor, but it will also be a huge challenge for me,” said Cooper. These riders, including Henrique Avancini, show an incredibly strong commitment to the sport of XC racing and mountain biking in general – they live the lifestyle and encourage others to ride. In turn, these riders also showcase Cannondale’s continued support of XC mountain bike racing as the brand positions itself as a leader in the sport. During the 2015 season, Cannondale Factory Racing will focus on a full World Cup campaign, with appearances in Europe and North America which will start a great Olympic qualification period as the team sets their sights on the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016. Trainingssturz in Albstadt | Schwere Schulterverletzung

„Traurige Nachricht“, twitterte Team-Manager Daniel Hespeler. Traurig für Manuel Fumic, der optimal vorbereitet schien auf seinen Heim-Weltcup, traurig für das Team, traurig aber auch für den Weltcup in Albstadt und seine Organisatoren, für die Manuel Fumic als „Weltcup-Botschafter“ fungiert.

Fumic 2ter hinter Schurter beim BMC Cup in Schaan / FL.

Fumic bietet Schurter in Schaan lange Paroli

Fumic chases World Cup victory

German national champ optimistic after most consistent season

After his most consistent season yet, Manuel Fumic of the Cannondale Factory Racing team is hoping to make the leap from World Cup podium finisher to winner in 2013.

"I want to have a top spot at one of the World Cups," said German cross country national champion Fumic to Cyclingnews at a recent team training camp in Finale Ligure, Italy.

"My top favorite [candidate race] for doing so is the opening World Cup in Albstadt [Germany]," said Fumic. "I want to make it my stage and perform well. I want to show people in Germany that there is someone from Germany who can race fast. It's just 60km away from where I live, and many friends and family will come."

Cannondale verkündet Cannondale Factory Racing  XC Team für 2013

Neue Dynamik durch eine Mischung aus Erfahrung und Jugend

Bethel, Conneticut— 13.

MANUEL FUMIC IS GERMAN NATIONAL CHAMPION

For the second time in his career, Cannondale Factory Racing’s Manuel Fumic won the XCO Elite Tiltle in Bad Säckingen, Germany this past weekend. In a time of 1:32 and with a gap of over two minutes to second place, he won the race in a dominant way and will proudly wear the German colors from now on in the International race circuit.

Fumic attacked at the end of the first lap and constantly grew his lead on the competition, which was mainly 2011 German National Champion and 2012 European Champion Moritz Milatz and multiple time Marathon National Champion Jochen Käss.

“It was important for me to go to the Olympics as the German Champion and I felt great today. I rode focused and tried to make no mistakes all race long, but was pushing in the climbs constantly as hard as I could to ride consistant lap times. My legs from last week in Windham were there and felt even better and today also luck played for me,” said Fumic. “With this win in my pocket, I will go into the final hard training period for the last World Cup in Val d’ Isere and for the Olympics.”

On the other side of the ocean, Keegan Swenson proved his good form from the last World Cups and won the Junior National Cross Country Title in the US in a similar way as Fumic. Keegan also won the Super D title, with a time that would have placed him in the top five in the elite race! On Sunday’s final race, Keegan took his third title of the weekend, attacking his lone breakaway partner to win the short track title!

"I felt great. I was planning with two or three to go to attack Tobin (Ortenblad) and get a gap because I knew he'd be a stronger sprinter," said Keegan. "I wanted that gap before the finish."

Both Fumic and Swenson will show their new National Champion jerseys in Val d’ Isere, France for the World Cup finals the last weekend of July, while Marco Aurelio Fontana and Martin Gujan will fight for their National Champion titles on July 22nd.

TOP PERFORMANCES FOR CANNONDALE FACTORY RACING IN WINDHAM

6#WC Windham | USA - Bad luck for Mani

Marco Aurelio Fontana had another top performance in round 6 of the UCI Mountainbile World Cup in Windham, New York. With a controlled effort, Fontana again made the podium, finishing in 3rd place. “That was a tough race today and actually I did not really feel good at the beginning, but could follow the leaders,” said Fumic. “Mid-way through the race I felt far stronger, but told myself to just hang in there and not waste my energy. This paid off later, when I was on the limit, but could defend my 3rd position. I am super happy and feel my program is working well in preparation for the Olympics.”

Manuel Fumic and Martin Gujan did not have the best of luck in Windham and struggled with flat tires on the tough and technical course. Fumic was leading the race with 15 seconds when he had his first puncture. After changing a wheel he fought back to 14th position, but flatted again and had to quit the race due to a crash caused by that flat tire. “I am really dissapointed because my legs felt amazing today,” said Fontana. “Unfortunately, flat tires are part of our sport and I was not the only one to find that out today. At some point luck will work out for me. I am on plan for the Olympics and the World Cup finals in the end of July in Val d’ Isere.”

Martin Gujan finished 41st after his flat tire, while Jeremiah had a great performance, finishing 19th.

In the Juniors race, Keegan Swenson finished second and Taylor Smith 19th. Both will compete in the US National Championships this coming weekend in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Cannondale Factory Racing is currently sitting in second position in the Overall World Cup Team ranking with one World Cup round to go in Val d Isère, France on July 26th.

5#Worldcup Mont Sainte Anne | Canada

Mont Sainte Anne, The Mother of all Worldcups

Cannondale Factory Racing riders Marco Aurelio Fontana, Manuel Fumic, Martin Gujan, Jeremiah Bishop and Alex Grant, plus Juniors Keegan Swenson and Taylor Smith had a strong appearance in their first fully united World Cup race in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada.

On a tough and technical course, Marco Fontana was with the chasing group almost all race long, until strong rain kicked in and made the course even harder to ride and more risky for injuries. “I did not feel super recovered from travel all week long, but was able to go pretty fast. I am already looking forward to Windham, as we now have some good time to recover in between races. The shape is there, I only need some relaxing,” said Fontana, who finished in ninth.

Manuel Fumic had a hard time finding his rhythm on the technically demanding course and struggled even more once the rain came. He finished in tenth place.

Martin Gujan rode strong from the beginning and was hunting for a spot in the top ten, until a crash slowed him to with two laps to go. Gujan finished in twelfth and completed the three spots for a fourth-place finish in the team ranking. In the overall ranking, CFR is sitting comfortably in second.

Jeremiah Bishop rode to a 34th-place finish and Alex Grant finished 57th in his first ever World Cup race.

In Sunday’s Junior race, Keegan Swenson deliverd another podium finish with a third place and secured his second position in the overall standings going into Windham. Taylor Smith finished a respectful 14th position in his first World Cup appearance today aboard his Scalpel 29er.

Next stop for the Global CFR team is the American World Cup round in Windham, New York this coming weekend.

Baggy shorts | World Cup Nove Mesto

quick explanation

After I received so much feedback about wearing the baggies, I just wanted to give you a quick explanation, why i ride them. I hope you find the answers to all your questions.

Small World Premiere – Fumic races World Cup in Nove Mesto in baggy shorts.

It was a plan of mine for a while already and i felt Nove Mesto is the place to do it. It is a new venue, with a new school course and with that to me it is the place for new things!
I discussed it with the team for long and we tried several things over the last months.
Using them ones does not mean i will use them all the time from now.

Its not that I want to copy downhillers or freeriders. Not at all. I just think it fits super well to the modern sport of XC Mountainbiking. Fast, sporty, technical and stylish. There are no disadvantages to me. I use the baggies every day in training for 2 years already.
To be really honest i think that at least 80% off all bikers and lady bikers, would lfeel way more comfortable riding in baggies than in lycra. So why not ride them on the highest level of our sport: XCO World Cup Racing.

Lycra has a long history in Mountainbiking and cycling in general and i was part of this over the last years. The sport changed and so did I. So why not change what we wear?

For all the critics. Yes i had my worst World Cup result this season in baggies, but this does not mean anything to me. Did you ever have a bad day? I did in Nove Mesto, and i hope for a better day in La Bresse. My legs are there and i am riding more consistent than ever before. I will bring those baggies to the podium. Promised!

2# WORLDCUP HOUFFALIZE | BELGIUM

Podiums in Belgium for CFR | english version

After a successful start to the 2012 UCI MTB World Cup, Cannondale Factory Racing proved to be in good form in Houffalize, Belgium by winning the team ranking. A third place by Marco Aurelio Fontana combined with a fifth by Manuel Fumic and Martin Gujan in seventeenth secured the first ever team ranking win for CFR.

Marco Aurelio Fontana, who finished ninth in Pietermaritzburg, rode the race he wanted to Houffalize. 'All in' was his motto, and that's precisely what he did in finishing third after riding most of the race alone about 20 seconds behind the leading duo.

"Wow, what a race on historical ground in Houffalize. I was really strong today, but was not in the front yet when [race-winner Julien] Absalon and [Nino] Schurter broke away. I rode consistently behind them with a 20 second gap. One might think I spent too much energy in chasing the leaders, but in fact I was happy to be alone to ride my own rhythm. I pushed where I was strong and recovered in other parts of the course. Our support crew helped me out a ton by giving me information all race long about the gap growing or getting smaller. Big thanks to everybody involved in this, I think it was a great show for our sport," Fontana said after the podium.

Fumic started the race with a high pace in the first two laps, recovered for two more, and put in a strong last lap to ensure a top result.

"I felt good all week but was not 100% sure if it would be enough to finish on the podium. But when I realized in the start loop that my legs were there I just kept going. My plan was to save myself for the finale and not waste too much energy. I am super happy with the two podium finishes this year already. I feel like this is where I belong, and it's tough to describe these feelings, especially when Marco is up there on the podium with me,"

said Fumic.

Martin Gujan in 17th and Jeremiah Bishop in 61st completed the good team appearance.

On Sunday morning, CFR junior Keegan Swenson rode to an impressive third place in his first World Cup in the 2012 season. Swenson dominated the race for long parts and surprised quite a few people with his performance.

Fontana, Fumic, Swenson and Bishop rode their Cannondale Flash 29er's in Houffalize, while Martin Gujan opted for the Flash 26.

Right after the race in Houffalize, Fontana and Fumic flew to London to have another training session on the Olympic course at Hadleigh Farm.

Würde man meinen.

race report

Pietermaritzburg XCO Worldcup #1

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa was the host for the first round of the UCI Mountainbike World Cup. With 2012 being an Olympic season and Pietermaritzburg being the location for 2013 Mountainbike World championships, the pressure was on.

CFR riders Manuel Fumic, Marco Fontana, Martin Gujan and Jeremiah Bishop proved they did their homework over the winter and started the season well.

The highlight of the day was Manuel Fumic's 3rd place finish, after being a dominant member of the three man leading group for the first two-thirds of the race. Teammate Fontana was back racing after he dislocated his shoulder two weeks ago at the Cannondale mtb team camp in Finale Ligure and finished a respectful ninth. Gujan finished the race in 27th and Bishop in 63rd, which brought the CFR team a respectful 2nd place in the team ranking.

"I was pretty nervous the last day, but this morning I was sure I could do good. I hoped to repeat last year's result, but half way in the race while in the leading group I saw the podium being possible. When Nino attacked, I could not go with them, but could keep riding my speed and lines for the last lap. I am super happy about the result and even more happy to have my Olympic ticket for sure. Now the team and myself can focus on the next races, and we are trying to confirm what we did today," a smiling Manuel Fumic said after the race.

"When I woke up in the hospital two weeks ago after dislocating my shoulder in Finale Ligure, I saw Pietermaritzburg in danger for me. But things developed well and I am happy I could race. I tried to play it safe and not take too many risks, just to make sure it heals up perfectly. I really look forward to the next races and for sure am excited for Manuel's third place and the team's second in the team ranking," said Fontana.

Fumic, Fontana and Bishop raced their Cannondale Flash 29ers and Martin Gujan was aboard his Flash 26.

The team’s next apperarances will be in Buchs, Switzerland, Nalles, Italy and then in three week's time at World Cup #2 in Houffalize, Belgium.

Rennreport

Fumic hopes for Olympic medal

cyclingnews.com | Interview

German targets World Cups, Worlds and Olympics in 2012

Manuel Fumic is among the elite mountain bike racers looking to compete and medal at the London Olympic Games in August. The veteran German rider, a member of the Cannondale Factory Racing team, is hoping to excel at what will be his third Olympic Games.

The German cycling federation has pre-qualified Fumic for its Olympic team. To finalize his selection, he has to finish in the top 15 in one of the first four World Cups this spring.

"I'm looking forward to the World Cup in Pietermartizburg, where I hope to finish that qualification and then I can just focus on the Olympics," said Fumic to Cyclingnews at a recent Cannondale Factory Racing team camp. The Pietermaritzburg World Cup will happen in South Africa on March 17-18.

Interview

Getting to know Manuel Fumic

Where is "home"? When was the last time you were there?

My home base is in Stuttgart/Germany. I have been at home for the last four weeks, my preparation for the 2012 season starts now. Currently, I am in Cape Town, South Africa for some base training.

I love being at home, but not when it's cold and winter is close! I prefer to spend the wintertime in sunny countries like South Africa.

How old were you when you first rode a bicycle?  Who were you with?

Actually that is a funny story, at the age of eight I had my first race; a mountain time trail. I was so excited that I raced flat out, to the point of exhaustion and my father had to push me the last 500 meters to the finish.

I won the race! However I must mention that I was only competitor in my age category. That was the beginning of my racing career.

Worldcup 7# Final - Val Di Sole | Italy

Fumic 11th in the final

After seven hard races, the 2011 World Cup season is in the books. CFR had its best season so far with Marco Aurelio Fontana sitting in eighth position overall, followed by Manuel Fumic in eleventh and Martin Gujan in twentieth.

Fumic and Fontana started the race well and positioned themselves in the leading group right after the start. Conditions were hot and the six laps on the Val di Sole race course were steep and hard. Both were not able to hold the speed of the leaders on the third lap and dropped back a little. While Fumic recovered and made up positions in the final two laps, Fontana had the same symptoms as one week prior in Nove Mesto, with cramps and pain in his lungs. Fumic ended the race in eleventh position and Fontana in nineteenth.  Martin Gujan finished the Val di Sole race in twenty-seventh position.

"I am not sure what this problem is that i had the last two races. It all starts well, and all of a sudden I can't breathe anymore and I feel powerless. I will work hard to find the problem over the next two weeks, to be back in the game for Worlds in Champery," Fontana said after the race.

Manuel Fumic stated: "The race went actually pretty good, I am just missing a bit of power to be able to ride with the top guys. If all works to plan, this power should be there for worlds. I changed my way of racing and it feels good the way it is."

Fontana and Gujan were racing their Flash 26, while Fumic used his Flash 29.

CFR will now have a one week break, before they hit the World Championships in Champery Switzerland.

Nove Mesto Worldcup 6# Chzech

Fumic finished 11th. Overall standings in 9th

Cannondale Factory Racing started the weekend well with a third place in the XCE Eliminator race for Manuel Fumic and went into Sunday’s XC race with high expectations. Right from the start of the 8-lap race, Nove Mesto local and Overall leader Jaroslav Kulhavy pulled away and seemed to be unbeatable. Marco Aurelio Fontana and Manuel Fumic were been present in the chase group for most of the race before both of them had to give up their hopes for the podium. "After my third place in the sprint I felt really good, but knew that I had some weeks of hard training for worlds in my legs. I am still not fully recovered, but will be for the coming races and especially worlds," Fumic said. He finished a respectable 11th place which leaves him in 9th position in the overall World Cup.

Marco Aurelio Fontana had a great race and was pushing really hard in the chase group until he started to get cramps and was forced to a complete stop for some time. "I was about to quit the race, as the pain was brutal. I am not sure what happened, but the team staff motivated me to finish for the points. I’m happy I did, as I am still in 8th overall after this result today. I will use the week to recover and will attack this coming week on home soil in Val di Sole, Italy," Fontana said.

Martin Gujan had a pair of tough laps at the beginning but came around again and finished 16th which gave him the points needed to be one of the Swiss riders for the WorldChampionship in just two weeks. CFR riders have been using the full selection of bikes available to them, with Fontana using the Flash 26, Fumic the Flash 29 and Gujan the Scalpel 26. The team is now on the way to Val di Sole, Italy for the final round of the UCI World Cup.

Worldcup 4# Mont Sainte Anne | Canada

Fumic after crash and flat tire in 14th position

This weekend the UCI MTB World Cup stopped in Mont Sainte Anne, Canada for the fourth round of the series. After two rainy practice days, the Canadian weather showed its best side with blue skies and hot temperatures. CFR Riders Manuel Fumic, Marco Fontana and Martin Gujan started strong in the race and placed themselves early in the top group. Marco Aurelio Fontana did not have the best day and also suffered from an injured shoulder from a training crash two weeks ago, retiring from the race after two laps. Teammate Manuel Fumic rode strong in the chasing group behind the leaders Kulhavy and Schurter, and looked capable of another World Cup podium, until he had a fatal crash in the rock garden section, which resulted in a technical problem on his bike that got fixed one lap later in the tech zone. "I crashed pretty hard in the rock garden , and misjudged a technical problem on my bike. I should have stopped in the tech zone straight away, but thought I could make it," Fumic said at the finish line. "Due to that, I had to run a big portion of the lap and lost a lot of ground. I was capable of a podium today, but gave it away too easily," Fumic added, disappointed. He secured his eighth position overall in the World Cup standings.

Martin Gujan was constantly in the top ten, but also had a big crash. "Burry Stander crashed into me in the rock garden. I couldn't do anything and went down hard. I am super happy about my result though," Gujan said.

Teammate Marco Fontana had a bad day and quit the race. "My head was not there at all today and I still suffer under my training crash from two weeks ago, but I will do better in Windham."

Fontana is currently sitting in 7th, Fumic in 8th and Gujan in 15th in the overall classification. All three are looking forward to the race in Windham, New York next week and the following races in Europe.

All 3 riders opted for different bikes for the Mont Saint Anne race. Gujan choose the Flash 26, while Fontana used the Scalpel 26 and Manuel Fumic opted for the Flash 29.

2# Worldcup Dalby Forest

Fumic in 5th on the Worldcup podium

Cannondale Factory Racing's Marco Aurelio Fontana, Manuel Fumic and Martin Gujan played their cards impressively well at this weekend's second World Cup race of the season in Dalby Forest, UK. After finishing 3rd in the XC Eliminator race in the town center of Pickering, Fontana grabbed another 3rd place in Sundays XC World Cup. Manuel Fumic finished 5th and Martin Gujan completed the successful event weekend with a 15th place.

Jaroslav Kulhavy made an early move and pulled away from his contenders on the first lap and only Julien Absalon tried to follow. Behind the two leaders, there was a huge battle for the rest of the podium spots,  and CFR was represented well at the beginning with all three riders present.  "I felt really good this weekend, but eventually pushed a bit to hard at the beginning in the chase group. I had to slow down a little and got dropped, but recovered well and am happy with my 15th place," Martin Gujan said.Teammate Marco Aurelio Fontana rode strong all weekend and showed again that he is one of the future stars of the sport. "I am so happy about my racing at the moment. Things work out great and it is backed up with results. We as a team are on the right path. I rode a calculated race and when it came down to the sprint, I knew that this was one for me. Two World Cups so far and twice on the podium, this is amazing," Fontana said post-race. Manuel Fumic was present at the front of the chase group all race long. "I might have worked a bit too much, but somebody has to do the work. With Marco and at the beginning also Martin in the group, it was such a good feeling and I knew that at least one of us wouldmake it on the podium, now it turned out to be 2. I had a hard time the last lap, but somehow was able to pull out a nice sprint. It feels good to be back on the podium, also for the team. We all work great together," Fumic said. Fontana sits in 4th overall, followed by Fumic in 5th and Gujan in 15th, with the team being second in the Teams ranking.

Manuel Fumic was on his Flash29er, while Marco Aurelio Fontana and Martin Gujan opted for their SRAM-equipped Flash 26.

CFR' s next appearance will be the coming weekend at round three of the World Cup in Offenburg, Germany. On the way there, the team will spend a day of training on the 2012 Olympic course in Hadleigh Park, close to London, to get used to the terrain and get a feel for the course.

Pre-World Cup weekend

CFR boys with strong performance one week before the Worldcup

CFR finished off their preparation time for the next two rounds of World Cup racing with strong results in Italy and Germany.

Manuel Fumic chose to race in Sallahausen at the German Bundesliga race to see if his hard training paid off, just one week before the next round of the World Cup. Racing against strong competition, Fumic managed to finish second, just beaten by German Champion Moritz Milatz. Fumic opted for a defensive racing style, as opposed to his usual “all in” method and controlled the race and the speed for his best training and as the ultimate test for the upcoming World Cups. “ I tried to stay calm at the start today and see how the race evolved, with a big focus on a fast last lap. It worked out and I am happy. I had two weeks of hard traing and know that after some rest in the coming days I will be spot on for the alby Eliminator and XC race. Straight after this we will head back to Offenburg for World Cup number three and the week after is the German National Championships. I am excited. Really Excited,” Fumic said after the race.

CFR teammates Marco Aurelio Fontana and Martin Gujan opted for the International Race in Lugagnano, Italy. Close to Fontana's house, the two performed on the highest level in the muddy conditions, finishing second and third. “I was riding strong, even though I didn't feel the best after all the training in the last 2 weeks. But a flat tire slowed me down a bit. I just hit a rock unluckily and had to change the rear wheel. I was not able to close the gap to Ralf Näf, but it's no problem for me to lose against such a high caliber athelete. I am looking forward to the time on the road with the team the next weeks for the World Cups and am in good spirits and shape. This will be amazing,” Fontana said on the phone while heading back to his hometown where he hosted the second edition of his event called FUFFENAFFEN FESTIVAL, a traditional party after the race in Lugagnano.

Martin Gujan was happy about his podium spot, but also came out of hard training weeks and a cold that slowed him down for a few days; however, he sees himself on the right path for the upcoming races as well.

Fumic took over the lead in the Overall standing of the German Bundesliga, just in front of Fontana.

The next big stop for CFR will be the World Cup in Dalby Forest with Fontana and Fumic both starting from the first start row. The team then heads back to Offenburg, Germany for the third round of the World Cup.

Houffalize - The Belgian Classic

Fumic finished 8th

CFR riders Marco Aurelio Fontana and Manuel Fumic took the challenge in Houffalize this past weekend, competing in the classic HC race. Known as a quick starter and with good memories in mind from last year's World Cup on the same course, Fumic had a quick start and came out of the first lap in the lead with a 20 second gap to 2nd place. Unlike to last year, he could not keep the speed and decided to wait for the chase group, which included teammate Fontana.

Both CFR riders rode strong together, until Fumic had to pay for his fast start lap and dropped down to 8th. "I tried to start fast, but realized soon, that I was not 100% today. We had some hard training, and I could still feel the travel and the race from South Africa. I am not too happy about today, but I know I'm able to play with the top 5 in the sport," Fumic said after the race.

Fontana rode a solid race, but could also feel that he was not 100% recovered from South Africa yet. "I had the podium in reach all the time, but the race was tough - really tough today. Steep climbs and descents one after another, this is what the new Houffalize course is. It was fun though and a super nice race. I learned more about my competition and also we as a team made quite some UCI points. We have to think about the Olympics already, and every point counts here, for me as a rider and for us as a team. I am happy with the last few weeks but look forward to going home as well for some rest and training until the next World Cups," Fontana stated.
Martin Gujan opted for a race-free weekend and resumes preparation for his next appearance at the Swiss Cup in Solothurn this coming weekend.

1. Worldcup Pietermaritzburg South Africa

Fumic with a good start into the Worldcup in RSA he finished 6th

Great Race for CFR in Pietermaritzburg

Cannondale Factory Racing’s Marco Aurelio Fontana, Manuel Fumic and Martin Gujan had a great showing of form at today’s Worldcup Race in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The team finished second in the Team ranking and took the first podium spot of the season for Marco Aurelio Fontana with a 5th place. Meanuel Fumic finished 6th and Martin Gujan took 14th.

In a fast race, it was Manuel Fumic who made the pace for the first lap, while Marco  Aurelio Fontana and Martin Gujan had some starting problems and had to catch up.
While the leading group around Schurter, Absalon and Kulhavy created a gap to the chasing group, Fontana put in two really fast laps bringing him back into 5th place coming from 24th position in the starting lap. Fontana fought his way into 4th and was about to close the gap to the leaders together with Hermida, when he had to go off the bike in one of the two rock gardens. “I had a really bad start, but knew that I was strong and could make up positions and was focused on the podium all race long. I’m happy with how the race went, even though I had some mistakes in there. But, mistakes are what you learn from, right?” a completely exhausted Fontana said at the finish line.
While Fontana had his ups and downs in the race, Fumic suffered a little after his strong start, but found his pace in lap 3 putting in some of the
fastest lap times.” I still can’t handle the speed changes during the races too well, but ride on a really high base speed. The Flash 29er helped
me a lot today, as it rolls so fast, so I could recover a little in the descents, while still carrying speed on the super fun course here in Pietermaritzburg. It also rode amazing through the technical rock gardens, where I could also make some ground. It was not a typical Fumic race today, but honestly I like the way it went. I learned a lot about myself and my racing and CFR did a great job helping me on this. I look forward to start from the first row in Dalby in three week’s time again, and the number 6 I will carry there is a good omen for me,” Fumic said with a smile on his face, referring to his 2010 Houffalize numberplate.

Swiss teammate Martin Gujan rode strong and got faster and faster throughout the race finishing in 14th. “I am not sure if I should be happy
or not, but overall it was good. I lost the sprint against Sauser, and with that we eventually lost the win in the Team ranking, but it was a great
start in the season for the team and myself,” Gujan said.

While Fontana and Gujan raced the Flash 26, teammate Manuel Fumic choose the Flash29er.

CFR is sitting comfortably in second position in the World Cup Team ranking, with 2 riders in the first starting row for World Cup 2 in Dalby Forest, UK in 4 weeks time.

Racer Bikes Cup Schaan

Fumic again on the podium

Team Effort in Schaan

With a 4th, 5th and 6th place finish from Marco Aurelio Fontana, Manuel Fumic and Martin Gujan, CFR proved to be on schedule for the 2011 World Cup races, which start in 4 weeks in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Manuel Fumic started the race with a high pace for two laps, but had a bit of trouble maintaining that speed afterwards. "I wanted to see how far I can go, and am kind of satisfied with how it went. I hoped to be able to hold the speed longer, but I know what to work on now in the remaining weeks," Fumic stated slightly disappointed after the race. "The crowd in Schaan was amazing and it was great to race under the sun after the last cold and wet races," he added.

Marco Aurelio Fontana, one of the most explosive riders on the circuit, rode a calculated race and used Schaan as another stop in his preparation for the World Cups. "Florian and Nino were just too strong for us today, but I am happy with the race. It was good to ride for so long with Manuel together, especially with me using the Flash 29er and he on the Flash 26. It was really nice to compare. I am well impressed by the lady with the long and thin legs," Fontana said with a smile in his face.

For Martin Gujan, it was a race that showed him the direction chosen in the last weeks was the right one. "I rode consistent and felt really good during the race. The start was a bit too fast for me, but I recovered well. The home crowd helped me a lot as well in the long climbs of Schaan."

Manuel Fumic wins Internazionali d'italia in Sirmione

Cannondale Factory Racing's Manuel Fumic landed his first victory of the 2011 MTB season at the C1 race in Sirmione/Italy. Fumic and Teammate Fontana escaped early in the muddy and technical race and increased the gap to their competition quickly. Fumic crashed and had to change his seat at the tech zone, which gave him a 15 second disadvantage from Fontana. Both raced strong and never left any doubt about their mission for a 1 -2 finish.

With 2 laps to go, it was Fontana who had issues and broke his rear derailleur off the bike. "I was riding strong and felt really good, until the point some little stone must have blocked my drivetrain and broke my rear derailleur. I tried to get to the tech zone in time to have it fixed, but lost too much time on it. I gave Manuel the sign that he had to do it, and I am happy for him that he did. It was great race here in Sirmione," Fontana said after the race.

Manuel Fumic increased his gap over the competition to more than a minute, and rode a comfortable victory home. "It feels great to be on top of a podium for me this early in the season. I feel sorry for Marco, as he was really strong today, but taking home the victory for the team is amazing. I am on track in my preparation for the first World Cup. Winning in such muddy, cold and wet conditions usually is not connected to my name, but I am happy to be able to show where I want to be," Fumic stated in the winner's interview.

Teammate Martin Gujan choose to do a road stage race in Croatia for his further preparation to the MTB season and had to fight with windy conditions in stage one.

No Luck at Worlds

Fumic finished 13th at Worlds

No Luck at Worlds

CFR’s riders missed their chance to get a spot on the podium at the Mountain Bike Worlds in Mont Sainte Anne. Marco Aurelio Fontana was in the leading group fighting for the lead when a technical threw him out of the race. Manuel Fumic and Martin Gujan both got slowed down by an early crash and flat tires later in the race.

Marco Aurelio Fontana had a tremendous start to the race and played his cards well when the group closed the gap to the leading couple Schurter and Kulhavy. “I felt well and everything looked good. In a rocky downhill I went over the bar and damaged my bike seriously. At the tech zone we realised that my race was over today,” a disappointed Fontana said in the pits.

Teammates Fumic and Gujan were then the ones that had to fly the CFR colours. Both got slowed down in an early start crash and invested a lot to catch up. “It is so bad if you feel after that a few meters, the race is more or less over because you got stuck in a crash,” Gujan said after finishing 16th. “I never managed to be in the front group and you have no chance if you are just catching up all time long,” Fumic added.

The German rider raced strong in the middle of the race and managed to close the gap to 8th place, but flatted in a downhill and lost a few spots at the tech zone. Gujan had bad fortune as well. “I was getting faster and faster after a few laps and found my speed but then with two laps to go I flatted and the group was gone. 16th place is not what I expected.

CFR will now travel to Cannondale’s head office in Bethel, Connecticut before flying back to Europe. The team will be back soon in the US for Cross Vegas on September 22nd.

Manuel Fumic wins first Medal at Worlds

Good start into the Worlds for Mani

Manuel Fumic wins first Medal at Worlds

Cannondale Factory Racing’s Manuel Fumic won a silver medal at the 2010 Mountain Bike World Championships in Mont Sainte Anne. With the German National Team he got second in the Team Relay. Marco Aurelio Fontana finished 5th with the Italian Team.

It was Fumic and Fontana that gave a great show on the first leg. Both were the riders for the start in their teams and opened a gap to the rest of the field. “My goal was to be up front after my lap and hand over in a good position to our second rider. Fontana and I were really fast on the course but also the rest of the German Team did a great job”, said Fumic after the awards ceremony. “This second place is a great motivation for me and a good start into these championships.”

Marco Aurelio Fontana did a great job as well. Being the fastest in the first lap Fontana had a good chance to defend his title from last year. But in the second leg the Junior flatted end all dreams of a medal were over. “Congrats to Mani for the medal. I felt good in the race and cant wait for Saturday”, Fontana said after his team finished on place five.

CFR Ready for Worlds

Good performance in Windham

CFR Ready for Worlds

Cannondale Factory Racing showed a strong performance at the 2010 World Cup Final in Windham, NY. Marco Fontana finished 9th, followed by teammate Martin Gujan in 11th place and Manuel Fumic in 13th. The team ranked third in the team classification.

Once again, the CFR crew was not on the lucky side of the race today. Manuel Fumic was with the leading group of five riders in four out of the six laps but struggled with a technical problem in the penultimate lap. “I felt good and was with the leading group when I hit a bump and my saddle broke. I had to ride two thirds of the lap without before I could change to a new one,” Fumic said after the race.

Behind him, it was the Italian Champion Marco Aurelio Fontana, who had the podium in sight “I could never catch up with the top five but together with José Hermida we were only 10 seconds behind. The race gave me a good feeling and I am ready for the worlds next week,” Fontana said. In the last lap, Fontana lost contact to Hermida and was passed by Julien Absalon, who was on his way back to the top five after flatting in the first lap. “I gave everything in the climb and maybe a little bit too much on the way down and I hit a rock and punctured my rear tire. That dropped me again one place.” Fontana came to the line on his rim.

Martin Gujan showed one more time that his form is still on the rise. From position 33 at the start, Gujan managed to be under the top ten after the start loop and played his cards in a clever way. First, he was together with Manuel Fumic in the leading group but got dropped half way through the race. “I wanted to finish in the top ten but I am happy about this race. The legs were good and I am sure, the Wolds in Mont Sainte Anne will be another good race for me.”

In the final series overall, CFR finished fifth in the team ranking. Manuel Fumic finished in eighth place in his first world cup season for CFR, Marco Aurelio Fontana was 16th and Martin Gujan was listed in 26th, by racing only in four out of six races.

Bad day in Offenburg

Not in shape for the home worldcup

Fontana Gives Everything In Offenburg

At the World Cup in Offenburg, it was Martin Gujan who surprised the team the most in his first full World Cup after being back in the saddle. Gujan finished 25th and is on his way back to the top 15. His teammates Marco Aurelio Fontana and Roel Paulissen came in together in 11th and 12th.

The race started fast and on the first lap, a three man leading group took off and would not be caught again. Julien Absalon and Nino Schurter made their way to the first spots on the podium. Behind them it was CFR’s Marco Aurelio Fontana who was fighting for the podium and looked good until two laps to the finish: “In front of me a rider had a flat tire and I could not pass him and the group was gone. But anyway, I was on the limit and had a hard time in the last laps,” Fontana said after a little recovery at the team truck. “Like always, I wanted to try it in the front but the power did not last for the whole race. Next week I will do some serious training and then we will fight back at the next World Cups.”

One group behind, Roel Paulissen fighting his way into the top ten. “I felt really well but then I crashed and bent my shifter. From this point on I could not really shift anymore and the rest of the race was tough. But at the end I was better again and I will see what’s next at the summer World Cups.”

Houffalize’s podium surprise Manuel Fumic did not have what you  could call a good week. A bad crash during training slowed him down. “I felt some pressure before the race but that is normal. In the race my legs were far from being good. That’s ok and can happen. I will do my homework until July and then you can see me back on the podium,” Fumic said. Manuel never gave up in the race and with two strong laps at the end he grabbed important points for the overall.

The surprise of the weekend was Martin Gujan. CFR’s Swiss rider did his first full World Cup of the season and managed to start well. “I made it into the top 35 after the start and with some strong laps I came into a group around 20th,” Gujan said. “I am surprised myself how good it went today and this race gives me confidence for the next weeks.”

In the overall, Manuel Fumic is now 5th while Roel Paulissen is listed in 13th and Marco Aurelio Fontana in 15th. In the team overall, CFR is 3rd behind Multivan Merida and Orbea but ahead of Scott Swisspower, Trek World Racing and Specialized.

Manuel Fumic Man of the Day in Houffalize!

Manuel Fumic Man of the Day in Houffalize!

Cannondale Factory Racing’s Manuel Fumic was the man of the day at the second round of the 2010 World Cup in Houffalize, Belgium. Fumic took off in the start loop and led the race until the last lap when Jose Hermida from Spain caught and passed him. Belgian Champion Roel Paulissen finished 14th.

It was the long and steep climb right after the start when Fumic saw his chance and got away. The former U23 World Champion opened a gap of 20 seconds to a chasing group. “I got a gap on the start loop and as nobody followed I thought, ok, I’ll try it on my own,” Fumic said after the podium celebration. “When I had 30 seconds I heard that Hermida was chasing me. He came up on his own and was so strong there was no chance to follow.”

Belgian Champion and local hero Roel Paulissen had a touch of bad luck right at the start. A crash among the top ten riders slowed him down and the leading group was away when he was back on course again. “I was far behind and had to catch up. My legs were not too bad but the slippery descents were not made for me.” Roel finished 14th and gained important points for the overall ranking.

The two other CFR riders could not make their way into the top twenty. Martin Gujan did his first race after his knee injury in January, completed four laps and decided by then to quit the race. Marco Aurelio Fontana had a bad day and suffered throughout the whole race, eventually finishing 41st.

In the overall Manuel Fumic is only 20 points behind the new leader Jose Antonio Hermida on second place. Roel Paulissen is listed on 15th position right in front of Marco Aurelio Fontana on 18th position. In the team ranking Cannondale Factory Racing is now in 3rd, behind Orbea and Mutivan Merida.

Flying through Dalby

Fumic missed the podium. 6th at first Worlcup in Dalby

Cannondale Factory Racings Manuel Fumic and Marco Aurelio Fontana just missed the first World Cup Podium at Dalby Forest by seconds. Roel Paulissen was fighting well with the winding course and came in 20th.

In Dalby Forest, the riders were flying around the six laps. We were twelve riders in the leading group and nobody wanted to step back a little. I was always at the limit until the leading trio got away, Fumic said after he finished 6th.

Fontana was riding really strong in the first five laps and looked like a candidate for the podium. When Absalon and Shurter got away, I missed only a little bit of power to follow them. After this attempt I blew up and could not stay on Manis wheel. The last meters were thrilling, and not only for the victory. Fumic sprinted down Ruben Ruzafa from Spain while Fontana was fighting with Jose Hermida and Ivan Alvarez Gutierrez for the top ten.
At the beginning of the race, Belgian Champion Roel Paulissen missed the leading group and had to follow just a few seconds behind. This course was so bumpy and winding I could not find my rhythm at all, even when my legs felt great. I am looking forward to Houffalize next week.

CFR will stay in England until Monday evening and will then travel to Houffalize, Belgium where the next round of the 2010 World Cup will take place on Sunday.

Good Start at Dalby Forest for CFR

Mani with podium

Good Start at Dalby Forest for CFR

The CFR guys got off to a good start of their World Cup Weekend at Dalby Forest where Manuel Fumic got second in Friday evening’s Pro Sprint Eliminator. His teammate and Italian Champion Marco Aurelio Fontana won the small final.

For the riders and hundreds of spectators, the Pro Sprint Eliminator was great fun and a great show. Held for the first time on a World Cup weekend, this race format brought action and thrilling battles into downtown Pickering, the host town of the 2010 World Cup opener. Cannondale Factory Racing’s Manuel Fumic did really well and was only beaten in the final by Thomas Litscher from Switzerland. “I had great fun in all the heats. The crowds went crazy and cheered all around the course,” Fumic said.

Marco Aurelio Fontana had a hard semi final and could not qualify for the last heat. “In the small final I won the start and controlled the group on the course. At the last corner I started the sprint and won my heat. I think with the right rules, this race format should be a part of every World Cup weekend and of the World Cup as well.”

On Sunday CFR starts the 2010 World Cup season. On the newly built race course in Dalby Forest, all teams expect a thrilling race. “The course is fun but also hard. It is not the climbing that makes the course difficult, but the technical parts that are demanding,” Belgium Champion Roel Paulissen said after training. CFR will use Cannondale’s Flash this weekend and will race once again aboard the lightest bike in the field.

CFR on the podium in Buchs

Mani finished 5th in Swiss

It was a great weekend for Cannondale Factory Racing in Switzerland, where Roel Paulissen, Marco Aurelio Fontana and Manuel Fumic did a great job at the season opener in Buchs and finished on the Podium.

Right from the start, the CFR guys showed up in the first group and it was Manuel Fumic who kept the pace high enough to open a gap to the rest. All three came out of the first lap with a lead of 20 seconds but were joined by an equally strong Tony Longo from Italy. It was Longo in lap two who set the speed and only Roel and Marco could follow while Manuel was paying for his efforts of the first lap.

Towards the middle of the race Longo used the long and steep climb and took off for his first victory in Buchs. He was so strong on the uphill, there was no chance to follow. I could only go around 80% today and felt not as good as I felt in Cyprus some weeks ago, Paulissen said after the podium presentation. The race became thrilling again when Longo flatted and Roel together with Wolfram Kurschat got very close to the leader again. I was stronger then Kurschat in the downhills but on the last climb he showed his climbing skills and I rode in a safe way to the finish line.

Behind the three it was Marco and Manuel that where fighting for the top five. In the middle of the race I felt a little bit tired and had to take out some speed but towards the end it was good again, Manuel explained his ups and downs during the race. His team mate Marco was in between two groups on the fourth lap when the mud and the rain took its toll and he had to stop at the tech zone to get his bike fixed. At the finish line the Italian Champion was behind Paulissen in 4th position.

Fontana King of the Maremma

Mani 12nd place at Maremma Cup

Fontana King of the Maremma

Marco Aurelio Fontana is the king of the SRAM XX Maremma MTB Cup. CFR’s Italian rocket won the last Cross Country race ahead of Swiss Champion Florian Vogel and World Champion Nino Schurter. At Saturday’s Short Race, Fontana was second behind Merida’s Andreas Kugler.

It was a superb and strong performance Fontana showed at the last race of the SRAM XX Maremma MTB Cup. Right from the start, a trio sprinted away, led by Fontana. On the penultimate lap Fontana attacked hard and opened a gap to Vogel. A twenty second lead was enough for the last round and Fontana brought home his first season victory.

Manuel Fumic showed a strong performance as well. In an international field, Fumic started well in a group with Olympic Champion Julien Absalon and Spanish Champion Hose Antonio Hermida. In the middle of the race he lost contact to the top ten but fought strong towards the end finishing eleventh. “I am happy with this race. It was an early season race to me and also it was the first time on my new Cannondale Flash,” said Fumic at the pits. “I am happy that I could keep up the speed towards the end. The longer the race, the better I felt.”

While the two CFR riders were fighting in Italy, Marathon World Champion Roel Paulissen stood at the line for his last race in Cyprus. On the super rocky course, it was a flat tire in the first lap that slowed him down a bit but he came back strong and finished second. “That was a lottery today. All teams had flat tires here. I felt good and wanted to win, but Kulhavy was gone too far. In the Overall I also finished second so my training camp here in Cyprus was good and I have a good feeling for the next races.”

The team tears down its tents in Tuscany today and is heading north towards Munich where on Wednesday the 2010 team photo shoot will take place.
